Alison Beder Solway’s memoir, The Miles We Run, is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. It’s easy to think that a book about surrogacy and marathon training might not resonate, but Alison’s story transcends these specific experiences. Her journey through surrogacy is honest, and the parallels with marathon training show how similar the emotional rollercoasters are—enduring discomfort, overcoming self-doubt, and celebrating small victories. This isn’t a book about athleticism or parenting; it’s about life and all its unpredictable challenges. Anyone who’s ever had to dig deep to keep going will see themselves in this story. I closed the book feeling inspired, empowered, and reminded of my own capacity for resilience.

As one who reads many memoirs, I often approach reading them with an expectation that the “story” will be interesting, possibly enlightening and, hopefully, entertaining. Alison Solway’s memoir, The Miles We Run, exceeds those expectations in so many ways. Her and her husband’s journey through IVF and surrogacy is compelling as one might expect it to be. However, it is Alison’s writing, describing that journey both metaphorically and personally, which brings the reader into their lives, championing the wins and despairing at the losses. “Running” has helped her identify her strengths, resiliency, determination, discipline and confidence and has been the catalyst that has gotten her through the many challenges she has had to face. And for me, the reader, that metaphor, along with the questions Alison poses at the end of each chapter, invite me to personally explore those same qualities.Once I started reading the book I had to continue it to the end, literally in one sitting. As one who rarely writes comments in my books, I found myself underlining and highlighting passages I knew I wanted to return to and think about in more depth. Alison’s writing is clear, evocative and exquisitely descriptive. I strongly recommend The Miles We Run.

Allison Beder Solway has great courage. From the her first "Mile" (chapter) she pulls the reader into the challenges she faces. Her medical conditions, her life story, her unbelievable quest to have children no matter what the odds will inspire women of all ages to think hard about their own goals . In challenging us to look into our own lives she establishes a unique, refreshing bond between the reader and herself. I loved the book!
